Our Available Dogs!

All of the dogs listed below are currently available for adoption or foster care.  All dogs have been spayed or neutered, have their distemper/parainfluenza/parvovirus vaccine, have been dewormed, microchipped and will come with a professional training course to be taken at a local PetSmart unless they are 7 years or older.  Attending the training course after adoption is required and proof of graduation/completion of the course must be received within 6 months following the dog's adoption.  Senior Dogs 7 years or older will not come with a training course but complimentary training and behavior consultations following adoptions are always available for every dog.  Senior dogs 7 years or older will also be given a dental if necessary.

All of the dogs have been assessed by a professional dog trainer so that we can make the best possible match for the dog's new home based on social skills, house manners, energy level, health requirements, temperament and training.  Although we try to make the most accurate analysis of each dog in order to find it the best home, Shiba Scout Rescue cannot guarantee a dog's temperament or actions as they too are creatures of free will.

Adoption fees are based off of the age of the dog and also whether the dog appears to be a pure bred Shiba Inu or a Shiba mix.  Younger dogs or puppies have a higher adoption fee because younger dogs find homes; older dogs get looked over.  Ages are estimates assessed by a licensed veterinarian unless the dog is received as an owner surrender where exact age is documented.  Adoption fees help to cover the cost of all of the dogs in our care and are considered a donation to the rescue.  Adoption fees are subject to change at any time and are non-refundable.

Puppies under 6 months of age (extremely rare):  $475.00; Mixed $400.00

Puppies 6 months of age to 1 year old:  Pure bred, $400.00; Mixed $300.00

Adult Dogs 1 to 3 years old:  Pure bred, $350.00; Mixed $250.00

Adult Dogs 4 to 6 years old:  Pure bred, $250.00; Mixed $200.00

Senior Dogs 7 to 9 years old:  Pure bred and Mixed, $150.00

All Senior Dogs 10 years of age or older do not have an adoption fee, however donations are greatly appreciated.

Dogs with medical conditions that need current and ongoing treatment (ie. dogs who suffer from juvenile glaucoma or cataracts, epilepsy, incontinence, etc.) will have a lowered adoption fee depending on their condition.  Adoption fees will NOT be reduced if the dog has a medical condition that is stable or does not need current treatment or surgery, ie. luxated patellas, heart murmurs, etc.

Shiba Scout Rescue can also accept a $100.00 non-refundable deposit to hold a dog for you, after the initial application and home visit have been approved,if you cannot afford the entire adoption fee up front.  However, the dog will remain in Shiba Scout Rescue's care until the adoption fee is paid in full.  Failure to complete payment of the adoption fee in the time allowed will cause the dog to be immediately taken off hold and put back up for adoption.

  • NEW POSTING!!! Fox

Fox is a 6 year old pure bred Red male Shiba Inu that came to us from Boulder Humane Society after being surrendered by his owners who were leaving the country.

Fox is very sweet, affectionate and playful.  He doesn't show his age at all.  He is good with men, women and children.  He is currently being fostered in a home with a 4 year old and a 1 year old.  He is also very good with other dogs and love to play.  And he is good with cats--there is nothing and no one that this Shiba does not get along with!

Fox is crate trained and potty trained, though he may have an accident the first day or two.  We recommend keeping him on leash the first couple of days in order to set his routine and schedule.  Fox is quiet in his crate and would make a great apartment dog.  If in a home with a yard, he needs a 6 foot wood fence as he just looks way too interested in the boundaries of chain link fencing to have us trust him.  Fox is also growing accustomed to a doggie door in his foster home.

Because of Fox's playful nature, he can sometimes be a bit evasive.  He needs work on coming because he wants to play.  He also can be a door bolter so if you would like a dog that you don't have to worry about paying attention to when you open your front door--Fox is not the right dog for you--in fact, no Shiba is.

Fox's adoption fee of $250.00 includes his neuter, deworming, distemper and bordatella vaccines, microchip and professional training course.

If you are interested in adopting Fox, please review our Adoption Process at http://shibascoutrescue.com/adoption_process/admin/

  • NEW POSTING!!!  Kyoushou

Kyoushou (ke-YO-shO), which means "charming smile" in Japanese, is a 3 year old pure bred Red male Shiba Inu that came to us from the Buddy Center in Castle Rock after being surrendered by his owner.  Kyoushou was surrendered for occasionally being food and/or toy possessive towards the other dog in the family so he was transferred from the shelter to our rescue so that we could begin to work with him.

Kyoushou is very sweet, affectionate, and is a fairly calm dog, especially for his younger age.  Kyoushou loves to just curl up on the couch next to you or sit at your feet while you are on the computer.  He is good with men and women but has not been assessed with children.  He is good with cats and other calm dogs but he will snap at excited dogs that annoy him.  Once he gets used to the other dogs in the household, he will come out of his shell and begin to show his playful side.

Kyoushou is potty trained and working on crate training.  He has an extremely high-pitched protesting Shiba Scream that he will let out when he is first put into his crate.  But if ignored, he will quiet down within 10-15 minutes.  Because of this, we do not recommend he be adopted out into an apartment.  However, Kyoushou can be in a yard with shorter chain link fencing and he makes no attempts to escape.

Kyoushou can take a few days to get used to new surroundings but consistency really helps him adjust.

Kyoushou's adoption fee of $350.00 includes his neuter, deworming, distemper and bordatella vaccines, microchip and professional training course.

If you are interested in adopting Kyoushou, please review our Adoption Process at http://shibascoutrescue.com/adoption_process/admin/

  • Yokou

Yokou (yO-kO), which means "sun child" in Japanese, is a 2-3 year old pure bred Cream female Shiba Inu that came to us from a puppy mill in Kansas.  Yoko is Mizuki's sister, and Tamiko's daughter.  Yokou was born into the puppy mill and kept in a cage her entire life to breed and produce puppies which started with her first heat at 6 months old.  When her litters quickly became small and unhealthy from overbreeding and no genetic screening for health issues, she was going to be killed.  Instead arrangements were made for her, her sister, her mother, and her father (already adopted out) to come to rescue.  Until coming into rescue, Yokou had never been inside of a house, never been on a leash, worn a collar, walked outside of her pen, or learned how to be a dog.  She needs a patient owner who will allow her to grow at her own pace.

Yokou is very shy but also very sweet.  She does well with both men and women and is being fostered with a family that has a 1 year old son and 4 year old daughter and is doing very well with the children.  She does great with other dogs and also does well with cats.  She will be your little shadow and follow you everywhere in the house.  She is not sure how to play with toys yet but will play with the other dogs in the household.  She would benefit greatly from another dog in her permanent home.

Yokou takes a little time in new places to adjust and may vocalize in her crate as she does have some anxiety issues.  Her foster mom feeds her canned food in her crate when Yoko is crated at night or during the day so that it makes the crate a positive place to be.  Yokou needs a plastic crate in her home as she feels more secure in those as she will break out of an all wire crate.

Yokou will go to the sliding glass door in her home to ask to go outside.  Her foster home has a yard with a 3 foot chain link fence and she makes no attempts to escape, though she should not be left outside if no one is home, just so that she does not become anxious and look to escape.  We do not recommend her in an apartment as she may vocalize when left alone and disturb neighboring tenants.

Yokou's adoption fee of $350.00 includes her spay, microchip, deworming, distemper combo and rabies vaccines, and will come with an 8 week professional training course.

If you are interested in adopting Yokou, please review our Adoption Process at http://shibascoutrescue.com/adoption_process/admin/

  • Mizuki

Mizuki (me-zoo-kee), which means "beautiful moon" in Japanese, is a 2-3 year old pure bred Cream female Shiba Inu that came to us in February from a puppy mill in Kansas.  Mizuki is actually Tamiko's daughter.  Mizuki was actually born into the puppy mill and kept as a breeder.  Shortly before her mother gave birth, Tamiko was moved from her outdoor run into a small metal kennel where she would have and raise her puppies for the next 6 weeks.  Mizuki, as well as her sister Yokou, and her brother whom we were not able to get out of the mill, were all kept to be breeders in the mill.  Mizuki has been repeatedly bred since her first heat at 6 months.  Until coming into rescue, Mizuki had never been inside of a house, never been on a leash, worn a collar, walked outside of her pen, or learned how to be a dog.  She needs a patient owner who will allow her to grow at her own pace.

Mizuki is a very sweet girl.  She can be a little shy at first but warms up quickly.  She comes around faster with women than she does with men.  She will follow you from room to room.  If you sit on the couch, she will sit at your feet for you to pet her.  If you are cooking in the kitchen, there she is laying on the floor.  If you go to the bathroom, you guessed it, she's waiting for you outside the door.

Mizuki has also been fostered with other dogs and really enjoys the canine companionship.  In fact, she needs another dog in the home, not only to show her the ropes of the house, but she will get very lonely and howl and shake when she is without her person or another dog to keep her company.  Mizuki has also been fostered in her first foster home with a cat and she would curl up on the bed with the kitty, but it was not enough to keep her quiet when her foster mom would leave for work.

Mizuki is crate trained and potty trained and goes outside with the rest of the dogs in her current foster home to do her business.  She needs a yard with a 6 foot privacy fence and we do not recommend her in an apartment as although she has been fostered in one, she is a regular at bolting the door and we do not want to see her end up getting out, getting lost or worse.  She is learning to walk on a leash and continues to improve.

Mizuki's adoption fee of $350.00 includes her spay, deworming, distemper combo vaccine, microchip and professional 8 week Beginner Course.

If you are interested in adopting Mizuki, please review our Adoption Process at http://shibascoutrescue.com/adoption_process/admin/

  • Tamiko

Tamiko (tah-MEE-kO), which means "many beautiful child" in Japanese, is a 5-6 year old pure bred Cream female Shiba Inu.  We received Tamiko in February from a puppy mill in Kansas where she had been producing litters in a cage all her life.  Yokou and Mizuki are actually Tamiko's daughters who were kept to breed.  After producing repeated litters that had congenital health problems, particularly with the puppies' knees, Tamiko and her two daughters were going to be killed.  Instead a kind person who worked for the mill owners talked them into getting the dogs into rescue, instead of putting them down.

Before coming into rescue, Tamiko had never been inside of a house, had never worn a collar or leash, walked outside on grass or pavement, been petted, met children, cats or many people.  Because of this, Tamiko, as well as other dogs that have come to us from puppy mills, takes a while to get accustomed to her surroundings but once she begins to understand which person provides the food she will stick to your side like glue!  She can be skittish of loud noises and quick movements as well.

Tamiko does suffer from some anxiety since she was always caged with a male mate unless she was raising puppies.  She needs a home with another dog to keep her comfortable.  Tamiko is crate trained but benefits from having her crate in the same room as the other dog if she is left alone.  She can be left loose for short periods of time but should start out crated in her new home initially.  Tamiko will follow other dogs out to go potty and will not have accidents in the house but does not always know how to "ask".  Tamiko either needs a yard with a 6 foot wood privacy fence (no slats) or she can be in an apartment/condo where she is walked for bathroom breaks.  Tamiko walks well on a leash but she tends to walk behind you.  She does not like when things come up behind her as she will jump and be a bit startled or will turn her head to keep an eye on things.

Tamiko will glue herself to any woman's side and will warm up to men but it takes her a little time.  She does great with most all dogs unless they are a little too excited and up in her face and she also does well with cats and small animals.  We recommend that she is not in a home with children under the age of 12 as younger children may startle her.  If raised in a home with a baby, she would probably get used to the child over time as it ages.

Tamiko's adoption fee of $250.00 includes her spay, deworming, distemper combo vaccine, microchip and professional training course.

If you are interested in adopting Tamiko, please review our Adoption Process at http://shibascoutrescue.com/adoption_process/admin/

  • Ukemi--ADOPTION PENDING!

Ukemi (oo-keh-mee), which means "passive" in Japanese, is a 5 1/2 year old pure bred Cream female Shiba Inu.  Ukemi had to be surrendered after her owner went through a bad divorce and could no longer keep her.

Ukemi is a quiet and gentle soul that takes a bit of time to learn that someone is alright.  Ukemi does not seem to have a preference for women vs. men.  She has been around visiting children in her previous home but we don't recommend her go into a home with children under the age of 10 as they may startle her.  She is good with other dogs though she may occassionally let out a growl if she is chewing on a rawhide and want the other dog to leave her alone.  She prefers calmer dogs because of this and is not much of a player.  Ukemi has not been fostered with cats to see how she would do with them.

Ukemi is also potty trained, using a doggie door in her foster home and loves her crate which is a plastic enclosed brand.  She also does well in a chain link fenced yard and enjoys sitting out on a nice day and watching the world go by.

Ukemi's adoption fee of $250.00 includes her spay, deworming, distemper combo, bordatella and rabies vaccines, microchip and professional training course.

  • Kouin--ADOPTION PENDING!!!

Kouin (kO-in), which means "Father Time" in Japanese, is a 9 year old pure bred Red male Shiba Inu that was one of the 8 Shiba Inus that came from the puppy mill operation in Kansas.  He is the last Shiba from this particular group that we received in October that is still looking for a home.  Before coming into rescue, Kouin had been in an outdoor run being repeatedly bred to produce puppies that brokers would buy in bulk to sell to pet stores.  He had never been in a house, been on a leash, given a bath, or even petted.

Kouin is initially still shy of strangers but is good with both men and women once he warms up to them.  He needs a patient and understanding human companion who will move slow with him.  He has not been assessed with children.  He is potty trained and crate trained. He is good in a yard with as little as chain link fencing but we don't ever recommend leaving him outside if no one is home to watch him.  We do not recommend him in an apartment as he tends to get stressed about going potty on leash with someone watching him.  Kouin walks well on a leash and also likes other dogs.  In fact he would really benefit from a home with another dog that can show him the ropes.  He has been fostered with an active male Shiba/Basenji mix, a female American Eskimo puppy, a female Japanese Chin, a female Shih tzu, a female Shiba Inu, a male Bulldog, a male Pug and a male Shiba/Rottie mix and has done well with all, including cats, too!  Once he warms up to you he will curl up on the couch next to you and also will begin to play with soft toys.  He loves to throw squeaky toys around and chew on a good bone or cattle hoove.

Kouin's adoption fee of $150.00 includes his neuter, dental, deworming, distemper combo vaccine and microchip.

  • Nakimushi

Nakimushi (nah-kee-moo-shee) is a 4 year old pure bred Red male Shiba Inu.  Naki came to us all the way from Minnesotta in September.  Naki has a history of food aggression which caused his owners to look for a better home for him.  He had been previously alpha rolled as a mechanism of discipline in his home which made his behavior worse.  Naki felt that he needed to defend his food or resources even more and would become so tense that even when fed a treat and touched his whole body began to shake out of fear of being punished.  We have been working on this issue with Naki and feel that he is ready for his new forever home.

Naki is really a sweet dog and in the right home will flourish.  Once he warms up to you, which doesn't take much but a calm demeanor and treats, he will lean his head into you for pets.  He loves to be rubbed under his ears and around his jaw and neck.  When he gets super comfortable, he will roll onto his belly for a good scratch and for some reason he loves to smell and then rub up against your hair like a cat would rub up against your legs.  He will also give your hand kisses as you pet him.

Although Naki is quite the lover, we do not recommend him in a house with children.

Naki grew up with a female Corgi but he was never socialized with other dogs outside of his home.  Because of this Naki does not get along with other dogs and does best as the only dog in the home.  Naki does well with cats; he really just ignores them.

Naki is potty trained and crate trained.  Naki really enjoys being outside and loves to lay out and sunbathe.  He does well with a yard with 3 foot chain link fencing.  He would also do well in an apartment as he has been fostered in one previously but he would really enjoy a yard.

Here is what Naki needs in his new home to make him a wonderful companion:

    • Naki needs to be crated when the family is not home or is sleeping.
    • Naki should be fed his dry food in his crate and should only receive food chews like bones, rawhides, hooves, etc. in his crate..
    • For the first few days in his new home, Naki should be hand fed canned food in order to form a bond with his new family and to establish that hands bring food, they do not take it away, nor do they bring punishment.
    • If he needs to be disciplined or if Naki goes near or gets an item or food in his mouth that he can't have, tell him "Leave It" sternly, or if that does not work, use a squirt bottle filled with water.  Naki should never be punished physically and should never have an item ripped out of his mouth.  You can also offer him a "trade" for the item he has with something like cheese or lunch meat.  This way Naki learns that by giving something up he gets something better!

Naki's adoption fee of $250.00 includes his neuter, deworming, heart worm test (negative), distemper combo and rabies vaccines, microchip and 8 week Beginner Training Course.

If you are interested in adopting Nakimushi, please review our Adoption Process at http://shibascoutrescue.com/adoption_process/admin/

  • COMING SOON!

    (ADOPTION PENDING)

Ken'ichi is a 1 year old Cream male Shiba Inu/American Eskimo mix.  Ken'ichi was originally purchased from a pet store in Greeley, only for his new owners to discover that they were allergic.  The owners found a new home for him, however 6 months later on May 28th, they received a call from Weld County Animal Control as Ken'ichi's microchip was still registered in their names.

As it turns out, a car fitting the description of the person who Ken'ichi was rehomed to was seen driving up to a rural field where someone got out of the car and threw Ken'ichi over a 6 foot fence.  Ken'ichi was found on the property with a badly broken leg and a scratched up back end and taken to a veterinarian who then contacted Animal Control.  We suspect that Ken'ichi may have broken his leg by being thrown over the fence or that there is a possibility of the dog being either hit by a car or hit with a blunt object and then dumped to avoid paying for the cost of veterinary care.

Ken'ichi is currently in foster care and will be available for adoption once his leg is healed.  He is a very sweet boy that loves everyone he meets, people, kids, and dogs.  He has not been around cats but his playful nature may be too much for a kitty.  He is crate trained and quiets down quickly at night.  He has not had any accidents in the house, but due to his injury is not being allowed out of his crate unless he is on a leash attached to a stationary person or tied to a table as he must have very limited movement.

If you are interested in adopting Ken'ichi, you may request an Adoption Application at shibascout@yahoo.com and please check out the Adoption Process at http://shibascoutrescue.com/adoption_process/admin/

  • Private Placement

Shabu is a Red neutered male Shiba Inu/South Korean Jindo mix weighing about 35 lbs, 5-6 yrs old, that was found running the streets of Denver a couple of years ago.

Shabu is currently being fostered through Evergreen Animal Protection League.  He has been fostered for over 2 years!  He has been adopted out 3 times but returned after his adopters did not take the advice of his foster parent.  His foster mom has 2 Akitas that do not like him and have gotten into major fights with him and as a result, he needs to find either a new foster home or his forever family. Can someone help?

Shabu needs to be with submissive dogs, small or large, preferably female and no cats.  His foster mom has 2 small Poodles that sleep with him and they keep the house neat and clean until she gets home. Shabu needs another dog as a companion especially when left alone because he cannot be crated. If crated he becomes very anxious and has been able to break through the bars and get his head stuck.  He loves to go on walks or runs, do most anything for treats, and knows a few commands such as "sit" and "down".  He is unsure of new people and will bark and hide before he gets to know you.  He is not recommended in a home with kids.

If you are interested in adopting or fostering Shabu, please contact Evergreen Animal Protective League at 303-674-6442
